Madonna is facing backlash for recreating the scene of Marilyn Monroe’s last photoshoot and, the scene of her death. In the pictures for the cover of V Magazine, Madonna poses on a mattress and beyond, imitating Monroe. Monroe died in 1962 following a reported overdose at her Los Angeles house, and her last shoot was for Bert Stern’s The Last Sitting, which the pop star is borrowing poses from.

“For some morbid and eerie reason, Madonna decides to re-create Marilyn Monroe’s death bed,” one user wrote when sharing picture comparisons on Twitter. “The black and white photo is actually Marilyn Monroe’s bedroom where she died”.

Many on Twitter have come to her protection, whereas others are more concerned with the fur coat she’s wearing. Photographer Steven Klein mentioned in a launch, through NME, that the shoot didn’t have as a lot to do with Monroe because it did the photographer-subject relationship, and he added that when he sent Madonna the photographs, she was “taken by the incandescent fragility of Marilyn at that moment in her life”. “We decided to find a hotel suite and try to capture the liaison between a star and the camera, the mystery, and magic of this creative collaboration,” he mentioned.
