Doctor Strange 2 undergoing ‘significant reshoots’

The second film in the Doctor Strange 2 series, titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is undergoing a “significant” reshoot. The publication reports that the Sam Raimi directorial will shoot six days a week for the rest of the year, which is really important because many movies can film their entire footage in that period.

Reshoots are common for this kind of big-budget project and often the reason directors, editors, VFX artists, or studios want a scene or two to reshot, to accommodate something they didn’t anticipate or the film. Changed the tone, for example, to make it more fun.

The duration reported by THR seems to be too long to be modest. The film felt like it was in trouble and Marvel didn’t like the original cut. 2017’s Justice League, infamously, went through extensive reshoots that drastically changed the film. The film was criticized and fans demanded an original cut of Zack Snyder, who left the project midway. The film was finished by Joss Whedon, who was asked to add humor to the film. When fans watched Zack Snyder’s Justice League earlier this year, they saw a radically different film that was different in tone and style. It was received positively.

It’s unclear how much of the Multiverse of Madness is being reshot, but it looks like the film we’ll see in theaters will be very different from Raimi’s original vision. In the Multiverse of Madness, Doctor Strange is the sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange and brings back Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role. While Scott Derrickson signed on to return as director from the original film, he had creative differences with Marvel, and Raimi, the backbone of the uber-successful Spider-Man trilogy (starring Tobey Maguire), was recruited.

Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda will also appear in the film. Her return was established by the scene after the credits of the ninth and final episode of WandaVision, in which she was able to present her astute appearance as Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently slated to release on May 6, 2022.
